RULES

Once teams have been selected and registered with the race officials, lots will be drawn as to the order of heats. The race will begin with the race coffin in place behind the starting hearse in a ready position. The corpse will be waiting inside the hearse in a prone position. The four pall bearers will stand in waiting, two on each side of the starting hearse.
At the sound of the signal the pall bearers will advance to the rear door of the hearse, open the rear door, slide out the coffin tray, remove the corpse, place it inside the race coffin, and place the burial wreath on the corpse. The tray must then be returned to its original position and the door closed.

Note: The corpse cannot help in any way. Scooting or moving by the
corpse to help the pall bearers in loading him/her into the coffin will result in a time penalty.

The team will then enter the cemetery course through the iron gates. Once inside the cemetery each team must maneuver through a predetermined funeral route to an awaiting grave. Failure to remain on the course will accrue time penalties for each indiscretion. Once the team has reached the grave site, the corpse will then be removed from the race coffin and placed onto the prepared grave. The burial wreath will then be placed at the gravestone. The pall bearers will then be required to return their empty race coffin back along the funeral route, through the gates, to the starting hearse and their original positions.

DETERMINING THE OVERALL WINNER

After the last heat of the race, each team's time will be calculated with any and all time penalties accrued during their run. The team with the fastest finishing time after deducting any penalties will be judged the first place winner.

TIME PENALTIES

A ten second penalty will be assessed if the corpse helps the pall bearers in any way during the race. After all, a corpse is a corpse of course, of course. If any of the prescribed procedure is missed, the clock will continue to run until the procedure is corrected. (i.e.: returning the coffin tray, closing the hearse door, placing the wreath on the grave, etc.) A five second penalty will be assessed for each time the team leaves the determined burial route through the cemetery. Remember, it's not proper to step on, or over a loved one's grave. The wheels of the coffin racer cannot be lifted off of, or scooted across the ground. If either lifting or scooting occurs, a 10 second penalty per inch will be assessed per violation.
